Annual Revenue for Distribution Automation and Substation Automation Is Expected to Exceed $12 Billion in 2025

The next generation of substations and distribution feeders is expected to use sophisticated technologies for increased automation

A new report from Navigant Research examines the global market for distribution automation (DA) and substation automation (SA) technologies, with market forecasts for revenue, segmented by category and region, through 2025.

During the next decade, utilities are expected to make significant investments in substation, feeder, and transformer automation technologies and solutions. Investments in automation are expected to cover many of the world’s medium-voltage (MV) primary and secondary substations, MV distribution feeders, and low-voltage (LV) transformers, eventually enabling a self-healing smart grid. Click to tweet: According to a new report from @NavigantRSRCH, global annual DA and SA revenue is expected to grow from $7.6 billion in 2016 to $12.2 billion in 2025.

“In the next several years, all types of utilities, including investor-owned, municipal, vertically integrated, and distribution system operators (DSOs), are expected to expand investment in DA and SA technologies,” says Richelle Elberg, principal research analyst with Navigant Research. “These investments will become increasingly important as utilities seek to improve reliability and integrate new distributed generation (DG) resources into the grid.”

As the next generation of substations and distribution feeders evolve, they’re expected to use increasingly sophisticated digital and wireless monitoring technologies, according to the report. Intelligent electronic devices with enhanced functionality will replace aging electromechanical gear and support increased levels of automation.

The report, Distribution and Substation Automation, analyzes the global market for DA and SA technologies, with a focus on three categories: distribution substation automation, feeder automation, and transformer automation. The report provides an analysis of the market issues, including drivers, barriers, and regulatory factors, and case studies associated with these solutions. Global market forecasts for revenue, segmented by category and region, extend through 2025. The study also examines the key technologies related to DA and SA, as well as the competitive landscape.
