Global Annual DER Management Technology Revenue is Expected to Exceed $2 Billion in 2025

Progressive US utilities are expected to drive this market in the near term

A new report from Navigant Research analyzes three segments of distributed energy resources (DER) management technology, including analytics, management systems, and virtual power plant systems, and provides case studies and insight on key trends, with global market forecasts that extend through 2025.

As utility customers continue to rapidly adopt DER, grid operators are beginning to encounter numerous challenges associated with the variability and changing demand patterns of renewables. While a global shift in policy is helping to counter some of these issues, new technologies designed to manage DER are also presenting options for vendors and utilities. Click to tweet: According to a new report from @NavigantRSRCH, global DER management technology revenue is expected to grow from $194.3 million in 2016 to nearly $2.1 billion in 2025.

“DER, such as solar, storage, electric vehicles, virtual power plants, and more, are set to triple over the next decade, bringing both challenges and opportunities to grid operators,” says Richelle Elberg, principal research analyst with Navigant Research. “Utilities will invest in DER management technologies, including analytics solutions and DER management systems out of necessity in many regions, and this nascent market is expected to grow rapidly during the next decade.”

Progressive utilities in the United States in particular are expected to drive the market for DER management technologies in the near term, according to the report. However, this growth is expected to be met by demand in both Europe and Asia Pacific (China excluded) in later years, while Latin America and the Middle East & Africa are expected to maintain limited, isolated deployments.

The report, DER Management Technologies, provides an analysis of three segments of DER management technology: DER analytics, DER management systems, and virtual power plant systems. The study provides a market overview that highlights key market trends, regional trends and case studies, and drivers and barriers. Global market forecasts, broken out by segment, category, technology, and region, extend through 2025. The report also examines the key technology issues related to DER management, as well as the competitive landscape.
