Lockheed Martin Energy, Sion Power, and Seeo Rank as Leading Next-Generation Advanced Batteries Companies in Navigant Research Assessment

Companies working to commercialize next-generation advanced batteries that partner with established battery technology companies have a market advantage

A new Leaderboard report from Navigant Research examines the strategy and execution of 12 leading next-generation advanced battery (NGAB) companies, providing industry participants with an objective assessment of these companies’ relative strengths and weaknesses.

Despite the progress made by commercially available lithium ion (Li-ion), flow, advanced lead-acid, and molten salt batteries, the path toward the commercialization of new battery chemistries continues in the motive transportation and grid-tied stationary energy storage markets. With several new chemistries planning to enter the market in coming years, todays’ industry players are focusing on lithium sulfur (Li-S) batteries, lithium solid state (Li-SS) batteries, next-generation flow batteries, and liquid metal batteries, among others. Click to tweet: According to a new Leaderboard report from @NavigantRSRCH, Lockheed Martin Energy, Sion Power, and Seeo Rank as the leading NGAB companies in terms of strategy and execution.

“The NGAB companies leading this market have differentiated themselves from the competition by being externally vetted by organizations like ARPA-E, creating public strategic partnerships, and demonstrating access to capital and expertise,” says William Tokash, senior research analyst with Navigant Research. “As these companies progress toward commercialization, they have the potential to bring forth new technologies that could encroach on Li-ion’s predominant market share.”

Navigant Research anticipates that NGAB companies showing progress toward commercialization will likely receive investment or will be acquired by the current leading Li-ion companies, according to the report. In four to six years, established Li-ion battery technology companies will be well-positioned to add these new technologies to their manufacturing, supply chain, and sales channels, offering a strategic advantage to those companies now in the pre-commercialization phase.

The report, Navigant Research Leaderboard Report: Next-Generation Advanced Batteries, examines the strategy and execution of 12 leading battery companies that are commercializing NGABs for motive transportation and grid-tied stationary energy storage, including lithium sulfur (Li-S), Li-SS, next-generation flow, and liquid metal batteries. These players are rated on 12 criteria: vision; commercial go-to market strategy; partners; commercial production strategy; technology; geographic reach; commercial plan execution; commercial product performance; commercial product quality; commercial product portfolio; pricing; and staying power. Using Navigant Research’s proprietary Leaderboard methodology, vendors are profiled, rated, and ranked with the goal of providing an objective assessment of their relative strengths and weaknesses in the global NGAB market. An Executive Summary of the report is available for free download on the Navigant Research website.
