Demand Response Tracker 4Q13

Global Demand Response Programs by Region,
Country, DR Market, Resource Type, and Customer Segment

Demand response (DR) has proven to be an effective way for utilities and grid operators to manage supply and demand of electric power, such as during peak periods when demand exceeds supply or when the demand is unstable and fluctuates. With the looming threat of energy shortages, the increasing cost of building new power plants, environmental regulations, and the growing need for utilities to incorporate intermittent renewable energy resources into the grid, DR has become more important than ever. It is now gaining a higher profile in those jurisdictions in the United States and those countries around the world that are just starting to adopt a demand management resource strategy.

Regulatory and technological changes are making it possible for DR to evolve to the next and more advanced phase in every nation. As a result, an increasing number of utilities and grid operators will expand their existing DR programs or introduce load reduction schemes to their customers, who will have more options in selecting a program that will best suit their preferences. At present, there are only a few dozen DR schemes outside of the United States, in countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan, and Saudi Arabia. However, China, Singapore, India, Malaysia, and Israel, which are currently testing the use of DR, will become the next frontier. Navigant Research has identified 1,364 DR programs currently underway worldwide.

This Navigant Research report tracks DR programs that fall into three market models that each addresses different objectives: capacity, economic, and ancillary services. It provides data on different types of DR programs, such as direct load control (DLC), interruptible load, load as a capacity resource, time-of-use (TOU), dynamic pricing, and demand bidding. It also covers programs focused on the major customer segments, including commercial, industrial, agricultural, and residential, and looks at the amount of load curtailment and the number of program participants reported by energy providers.

Key Questions Addressed:
  • How many DR programs are offered by each country, region, DR market and resource type, and customer segment?
  • What kinds of DR programs are being offered and where?
  • What are the load curtailment and number of participants reported in each program?
  • What technologies and resource types are being used?
  • What percentage of global DR programs relies on time-of-use (TOU) schemes?
Who needs this report?
  • DR and smart grid technology vendors
  • Utilities
  • Independent system operators
  • Regional transmission operators
  • Curtailment service providers
  • Government agencies and policymakers
  • Investor community
