Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment Tracker 3Q13

Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment Infrastructure Installations by Technology,
Accessibility, U.S. Metropolitan Statistical Area, and World Region

Growing sales of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) in select regions worldwide have fueled the creation of the commercial electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) infrastructure industry. In some regions of the world, governments that were the initial investors in EVSE deployments began to step back at the end of 2012 as the PEV and EVSE markets were launched and began to take shape.

Since the EVSE industry has become more dependent on private rather than public investment, innovative business models and practices are emerging to make the industry more streamlined, user friendly, and cost-effective. An example is the adoption of Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP), a communications standard developed in Europe that allows PEV owners to use service networks of which they are not subscribers. Further innovations include charging optimization software and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies. The advancement of these technological innovations strengthens the business case for the increased adoption of EV technologies and will lay the foundation for future private and public EVSE network deployments. Navigant Research estimates that as of 3Q 2013, there are just under 64,000 publicly accessible charging stations installed globally.

This Navigant Research report surveys over 150 key players in the EVSE industry and tracks the total number of publicly accessible EVSE units worldwide, segmented by region and technology. Additional focus is placed on EVSE units for both public and private installations in the United States. Data on the number of installations in the United States is segmented by state and by those metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) with populations over 500,000. The report also examines EVIE technologies, business models, and market barriers on a regional basis.

Key Questions Addressed:
  • What is the installed publicly accessible EVSE infrastructure base worldwide?
  • How does the installed publicly accessible EVSE base differ by region?
