Global AMI Tracker 2Q16

Smart Meter Projects: Project Tracking, Regional Analysis,
and Vendor Selection Share

In North America, the United States has seen a slowdown in smart meter project activity following the conclusion of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Smart Grid Investment Grant Program. This program contributed to an influx of smart meter installations across the United States from 2009 to 2012, but fewer project announcements have occurred since 2013. One notable exception comes from Consolidated Edison and Orange & Rockland Utilities, which plan to deploy 3.9 million smart meters across their service territories beginning in 2017.

Outside of North America, there has been significant activity across the European and Asia Pacific smart meter markets. Europe is a highly variable region with regards to smart meter deployments. Although some nations are just starting to experiment with large-scale deployments (United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Poland), others have already reached nearly full penetration (Italy and Sweden). In Asia Pacific, China and Japan are in the midst of aggressive smart meter deployments while countries like India and Malaysia just begin their forays into smart meters. Latin America and the Middle East & Africa may present low-hanging fruit in the near future as these regions begin to adopt smart meters into their portfolios. Mexico is already pursuing large-scale AMI deployments through the state-owned Federal Electricity Commission and deployments are ongoing in Jamaica, Brazil, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, among others. In the Middle East, recent smart meter activity has been seen in Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Lebanon.

This Navigant Research report provides an analysis of global utility smart meter projects. It tracks data related to global customer endpoints, meter manufacturers, advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) communications vendors, systems integrators, and meter data management (MDM) vendors. The report also includes an examination of the technologies, timeframes, and vendor selections for AMI deployments across the world, along with vendor selection share analysis for North America.

Key Questions Addressed:
  • What are the key smart meter projects around the world?
  • Which utilities are actively engaged in smart meter deployments on a worldwide basis?
  • What technologies have various utilities selected for their deployment projects?
  • What types of smart meter-related vendors are working with specific utilities?
  • What are the vendor selection shares of these companies in North America?
