Microgrid Deployment Tracker 2Q14

Commercial/Industrial, Community/Utility, Institutional/Campus, Military, Remote, and DC Microgrids: Operating, Planned, and Proposed Projects by World Region

This seventh edition of the Microgrid Deployment Tracker reveals a global microgrid market that continues to become increasingly robust. Navigant Research’s focus in this update is primarily on the remote, off-grid segment, which represents the best overall value proposition for the microgrid platform today. Although most microgrids are still retrofit projects that assemble existing assets to enable legacy technology to communicate with new technology, they are beginning to move more into the mainstream. Around the world, new vendors continue to enter this space with new projects and approaches.

As of 2Q 2014, Navigant Research has identified a total of 4,393 MW of total microgrid capacity throughout the world, up from 4,148 MW in the previous update in 4Q 2013. The 2Q 2014 Microgrid Deployment Tracker again reinforces the premise that North America is the world’s most fertile environment for microgrids due to the declining reliability of its distribution grid. The region is still the world’s leading market for microgrids with a planned, proposed, and deployed capacity of 2,874 MW, which represents roughly 66% of the global microgrid market. North America also leads the world in terms of microgrids currently under development or in the proposal process with a capacity market share of 67%.

This Navigant Research report tracks data on known grid-tied and remote microgrid projects in the proposal, planning, and deployed stages in six principal geographies, including details on the various technologies employed in individual projects. The report covers six microgrid segments: commercial/industrial, community/utility, institutional/campus, military, remote systems, and direct current (DC) systems. Specific information is provided on the capacity of the following generation assets: diesel, combined heat and power (CHP), solar PV, wind, and fuel cells. The Tracker also details the rated capacity, duration, and types of energy storage for each project and breaks out data by world region and microgrid segment.

Key Questions Addressed:
  • Which microgrid segments are gaining the most market traction?
  • Which regions of the world have the most microgrids already in operation?
  • What types of generation resources have been and are being deployed in microgrids?
  • Which companies are currently developing microgrids – and where?
  • What is the relative scale of microgrids being deployed in both the remote and grid-tied market segments?
Who needs this report?
  • Microgrid developers and integrators
  • Distribution utilities
  • Microgrid system controller vendors
  • Distributed generation vendors
  • Energy storage manufacturers
  • Academic and research organizations
  • Investor community
