Natural Gas Vehicles

Natural Gas Passenger Cars, Light Duty Trucks and Vans, Medium/Heavy Duty Trucks and Buses, and Commercial Vehicles: Global Market Analysis and Forecasts

Various regional factors affect the markets for natural gas vehicles (NGVs). Examples include the availability of refueling infrastructure, tightening tailpipe emissions requirements, and total cost of ownership. Increased gas extraction through hydraulic fracturing in North America and other regions has helped increase the supply and reduce the cost of natural gas (NG) while additional pipelines for distribution in Asia Pacific and Europe have improved availability. However, a significant portion of the cost advantage of NG has evaporated in the past 12 months as a result of the collapse of world oil prices.

Several regions already have substantial markets for NGVs that are expected to continue growing over the next decade, but at a slower pace than what was projected prior to the drop in oil prices. Additional issues could hinder growth prospects, including ongoing political tensions in Eastern Europe that could affect supply and the prices of gas exports from Russia to Western Europe. Meanwhile, battery suppliers and OEMs, including LG Chem, General Motors, and Tesla, are publicly indicating major gains in battery cost reduction and capacity that could also erode some of the advantages of NGVs. According to Navigant Research, global annual NGV sales are expected to grow from 2.4 million vehicles in 2015 to 3.9 million in 2025.

This Navigant Research report examines the global market for NGVs, with a focus on passenger cars, light duty trucks and vans, medium/heavy duty trucks and buses, and commercial vehicles. The study provides an analysis of the key factors expected to influence demand for NGVs, including fuel prices, infrastructure availability, regulations, and technical issues. Global market forecasts, broken down by vehicle segment, alternative drivetrain, and region, extend through 2025. The study also analyzes how market and technology issues will affect automobile and truck manufacturers; suppliers of NG engines, fuel storage, and delivery hardware; and the companies that convert liquid-fueled vehicles to NG.
