Pike Pulse Report: Clean Diesel Vehicles

Assessment of Strategy and Execution for 13 Leading Automotive OEMs

Diesel cars have proven very popular in regions where gas prices are high and consumers demand fuel efficiency across a range of vehicle classes. Clean diesel cars are those that meet the limits for nitrogen oxide or particulate matter emissions set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Tier 2 standards or the European Union’s Euro 5 standards. Clean diesel is also the standard in Japan, Australia, and South Korea, and is coming to other important car markets like Brazil.

The manufacturers in this Pike Pulse report include not only companies that are leading today, but also ones that are poised to capture more market share, either in the largest clean diesel market today, Europe, or in markets that are beginning to open up to clean diesel, such as North America. The current leader in the market, Volkswagen Group, is well-established in Europe and has the potential to grow its sales in North America and other new markets. The other European OEMs are also current leaders in clean diesel, but not all show the same commitment to expanding into new markets. Mazda and General Motors are among the companies aiming to be successful in new markets such as North America or Asia Pacific.

This Pike Research report evaluates 13 diesel vehicle manufacturers that rank among the top 20 manufacturers in terms of global sales and that also target a range of regional markets. Pike Research rates these companies on 12 criteria for strategy and execution, including vision, go-to-market strategy, partners, production strategy, technology, geographic reach, sales, marketing, and distribution, product performance, product quality and reliability, product portfolio, pricing, and staying power. Using Pike Research’s proprietary Pike Pulse methodology, vendors are profiled, rated, and ranked with the goal of providing industry participants with an objective assessment of these companies’ relative strengths and weaknesses in the growing clean diesel marketplace.
