In the first quarter of 2011 (1Q11), global smart meter shipment volumes continued to be strong, with a total of 17.4 million units shipped during the period and a nearly equal number of associated advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) communications nodes. Fully 70% of these shipments were in China in support of a massive rollout by State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC). Excluding China, global smart meter shipments totaled nearly 5.3 million units, with more than two-thirds of these occurring in North America.

The quarter was not a very busy period for new project announcements, however. Pike Research’s tracking indicates that deployment announcements in the United States covered 362,400 endpoints from six different utilities. However, shortly after the close of Q1, two major Canadian announcements were made: BC Hydro (won by Itron) and Hydro Quebec (won by Landis+Gyr). Pike Research’s vendor selection share analysis shows that Landis+Gyr is the top meter manufacturer in terms of cumulative vendor selections, with 24% share, followed by Itron with 22% share and Sensus with 20% share. Silver Spring Networks holds the highest share of vendor selections in communications modules with 24% share, followed by Sensus with 22% share.
