Pike Research is estimating that by 2015 the United States will have 667,000 plug-in vehicles on the road, well short of President Obama’s goal of 1 million. The plug-in electric vehicle market (both plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles) is finally getting underway in earnest with a number of new models launching. However, the market has been slow to pick up steam as a result of limited vehicle roll-out and production delays, narrow geographic availability, and falling gas prices. While the future remains bright for plug-in electric vehicles, the costs and limited availability through 2013 makes the political goal of one million vehicles on the road by 2015, seem very unlikely.
