The Microgrid Deployment Tracker 2Q18 is the 14 edition of Navigant Research’s global microgrid database, which is updated semiannually. Remote projects lead all segments in this iteration of the Tracker for total microgrid power capacity and total number of database entries with shares of over 38%. The commercial and industrial (C&I) segment leads in terms of new microgrid power capacity with a share of more than 50%.
As of 2Q18, Navigant Research has identified 2,134 projects representing 24,981 MW of proposed, under development, and operational power capacity. This edition of the Tracker includes 240 new projects from 139 countries, supported by survey responses from Schneider Electric, Bloom Energy, Encorp, Siemens, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL), ABB Group, and others. Key trends include strong growth in the remote segment and the quickly shrinking gap between solar PV and diesel capacities. Solar PV added 111 entries and 475 MW of capacity to diesel’s 45 entries and 544 MW. For the first time, this version of the Tracker also includes business model data on selected projects initiated between 2015 and 2017.
This Navigant Research report tracks data on known grid-tied and remote microgrid projects in the proposal, planning, and deployed stages across six regions worldwide. It covers seven market segments: C&I, community, utility distribution, institutional/campus, military, remote, and direct current. The Tracker also covers five core business models: energy as a service, government financing, owner financing, utility rate base, and other. Specific information is provided on capacity and entry numbers by distributed generation type, total, operational and proposed capacities, and the top 10 microgrid vendors.
