Navigant Research Leaderboard: DERMS Vendors

Assessment of Strategy and Execution for 16 DERMS for DER and Grid Management Providers

Distributed energy resources (DER) have traditionally been isolated. This paradigm is changing as adoption drivers grow and distribution becomes more evenly allocated. Navigant Research forecasts that installed DER capacity, including distributed generation, energy storage, microgrids, EVs, and demand response (DR), will increase significantly over the next decade. As the roles of stakeholders evolve (from the end customer to the utility and all the way up to policymakers), there are still many questions as to how DER will be optimally managed.

While utility customers motivated by cost and environmental benefits rapidly adopt DER, grid operators are beginning to encounter numerous challenges associated with the variability and changing demand patterns of renewables. These challenges also have significant effects on the aging electrical grid, which was originally designed to support one-way power flow and was sized according to predictable demand. A new wave of technologies developed to manage DER, like DER management systems (DERMSs), presents both opportunities and challenges for vendors and utilities. Incumbent IT/OT vendors, new entrants, and startups have each approached product development from different perspectives, creating a diverse landscape of vendors in this highly competitive market.

This Navigant Research Leaderboard examines the strategy and execution of 16 leading vendors offering DERMSs for DER and grid management solutions. These providers are rated on 12 criteria: vision; go-to-market strategy; partners; product integration strategy; technology; geographic reach; sales, marketing, and distribution; product performance; product quality and reliability; product portfolio and ecosystem; pricing; and staying power. Using Navigant Research’s proprietary Leaderboard methodology, vendors are profiled, rated, and ranked with the goal of providing an objective assessment of these companies’ relative strengths and weaknesses in the global DERMS market.
