Navigant Research Leaderboard: ESCOs

Assessment of Strategy and Execution for 14 Energy Service Companies

Energy service companies (ESCOs) have been instrumental in providing access to energy efficiency technologies and services in market segments that would not normally be able to consider or afford these types of capital-intensive projects. This access is largely enabled using energy performance contract (EPC) or energy savings performance contract (ESPC) financing structures. These structures require little to no upfront capital and move the financial risk of the project from the end-use customer to the ESCO itself via performance guarantees or shared savings resulting from reduced energy consumption.

The ESCO market in the United States is mature and well established, while other global regions have varying degrees of acceptance, market penetration, and maturity. In almost all regions, the key target market segments include federal, state, and local governments (municipalities), universities, schools, and hospitals (MUSH), as well as public housing and commercial and industrial facilities. Experience and brand presence in this market can provide a significant competitive advantage to these types of companies. The ESCO units of these companies must maintain a measure of independence from internal product-related sales, however, because customers desire objective consultations and results. Moreover, many facilities managers are familiar with certain brands of technologies already installed in their buildings and would like to keep those brands intact.

This Navigant Research Leaderboard examines the Strategy and Execution of 14 leading ESCOs with the experience and capacity to provide a diverse level of performance contracting projects across a broad base of client market segments. These ESCOs are rated on 12 criteria: vision; go-to-market strategy; technology strategy; partners; client segment access; geographic reach; ESCO experience; breadth of ESCO offerings; project portfolio; sales and marketing; financing; and staying power. Using Navigant Research’s proprietary Leaderboard methodology, vendors are profiled, rated, and ranked with the goal of providing industry participants with an objective assessment of these companies’ relative strengths and weaknesses in the ESCO performance contracting market.
